- According the National Geographic, in 1493, sailing off the coast of Hispaniola, Christopher Columbus spotted three sirens or mermaids, he documented that they were not as beautiful as they legend due to the large and slightly masculine features. Today we consider Columbus’ sighting to have been of manatees.
- "On the previous day [8 Jan 1493], when the Admiral went to the Rio del Oro [Haiti], he said he quite distinctly saw three mermaids, which rose well out of the sea; but they are not so beautiful as they are said to be, for their faces had some masculine traits." (Voyages of Columbus 218)."
- The oldest known seashell collection was found in Pompeii and dates back to 74AD. The collector gathered these seashells for no other reason than their beauty and the collection was made of shell from around the world including the distant waters of the Red Sea.
